A controversial Nevada judge is reportedly recovering from injuries she sustained in an incident late Thursday at her Las Vegas home, following surgery for skull fractures on Friday.

The condition of suspended District Judge Elizabeth Halverson, 50, whose 49-year-old husband is accused of beating her with a frying pan, has improved from critical to serious, a friend tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal. However, Halverson’s head is “totally bandaged,” she can’t open her eyes because of swelling, she’s bruised and in pain, and, as the newpaper puts it, she’s “not very coherent,” according to the friend, Bobbi Tackett, who visited the judge yesterday at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

As discussed in an earlier ABAJournal.com post, Edward Halverson has been charged with felony attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon and battery with substantial bodily harm.

He is being held in the Clark County Detention Center pending a bond hearing tomorrow, reports KTNV, an ABC affiliate. Although he has a prior record that includes 10 arrests and time served in three different states, he has never before been arrested in a domestic violence case, the station says.
