Judge Cinda Fox of California’s San Joaquin County tried to return to the bench after she was stabbed in the courtroom last year, but the emotional scars are making it too difficult.

After repeated tries at a return, the 52-year-old is retiring on disability pay, according to the Stockton Record. “My decision to retire from the bench was a very difficult and painful one,” Fox said in a statement. “It came only after I made every effort I could to come back.”

Fox was stabbed last March by a defendant on trial for murder. A deputy shot and killed the defendant, David Paradiso, after he lunged at Fox with a jailhouse shank. Fox has filed a claim against San Joaguin County that questions courthouse security, KCRA.com reports.
