Enterprising Fifth Grader Organizes School Bracket, Learns Gambling Is 'Illegal, Sort Of'
An Omaha fifth grader thought he could win the jackpot when he organized his own March madness bracket and sought $5 from friends who wanted to wager.
Instead, 11-year-old Max Kohll got hauled in front of his principal at Columbian Elementary, the Omaha World Herald reports. “It turns out that Principal Kathy Nelson, using interrogative powers that Max has not deciphered, somehow figured out that Max had brackets and $10 hidden in his locker,” the story says.
Kohll’s mother, Janet Kohll, admits she knew about her son’s plans, and she even loaned him $5 to play. “I didn’t even blink,” she told the World Herald. “I make sure I don’t send plastic knives to school in his backpack. I never thought about gambling.”
The principal lectured Kohll and his class about the error of his ways. Kohll says he has learned his lesson. “It’s not OK to gamble,” he tells the newspaper. “It’s like, illegal, sort of.”
