On June 2, Epsilon general counsel Jeanette Fitzgerald sat before a congressional panel gathered to address the future of data-security legislation in the wake of a security breach that potentially affected millions of customers at one of the largest data management firms in the world.

A month later, Fitzgerald—focused on rebuilding her company’s brand and bolstering fortifications against cyber bandits—has shared the lessons learned from the severe breach, Corporate Counsel reports.

She also announced an innovative collaboration with Verizon Communications on new security technologies that will allow the company to quickly track malicious IP addresses, and identify and mitigate electronic crimes in ways previously not possible.

Fitzgerald’s tips include:

• “Have a data response team and a response plan in place: ‘I cannot stress enough how important it is to have staff across disciplines who are smart and capable of thinking on their feet. [The crisis] required fast-paced decisions.’ “

• “Consider your insurance now. If you don’t have it, can you get it? And if you have it, ask yourself if it is broad enough to cover the many situations you may encounter.”

• “If you find yourself in a data crisis, take some time to evaluate what the repercussions are likely to be. ‘Thinking it through first will guide how you respond to the fast-moving issues.’ “
