An assistant dean at the University of Illinois law school who resigned on Aug. 31 has been charged with stealing from a Chicago agency in a former job.

Ming Liu of Urbana, also known as Ming Liu Bengtsson, is accused of stealing $20,000 from Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs, according to the Champaign News-Gazette. She was charged with theft, official misconduct and forgery.

Prosecutors allege Liu created a $20,000 check payable to herself, but made changes in the electronic accounting system that made it appear the check was made out to the U.S. Postal Service, according to a press release.

Liu was hired June 1 at the law school as assistant dean for finance and human resources, the story says. Her salary was $115,000.
