Former Kirkland & Ellis partner Elizabeth Papez is jumping to Winston & Strawn this fall after an unusual detour: a stint in the Justice Department and, most recently, a clerkship for Justice Clarence Thomas.

Papez, 36, explained her decision to opt for a clerkship this way: “It boils down to this,” she told the Washingtonian’s Capital Comment blog. “I’m interested in any opportunity that will enhance my skill set and make me a better lawyer.”

Papez made partner at Kirkland in 2005 and left in 2007 to join the Justice Department, where she advised the executive branch on matters including financial reform, national security, and intellectual property, according to The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times.

Thomas has indicated he seeks clerks with a wide range of work experiences, the BLT says.
