The controversial former Las Vegas judge who was banned from the bench for belittling staff has been ordered to pay $50,000 to a former assistant for defaming her.

The former judge, Elizabeth Halverson, did not attend the proceedings, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Las Vegas Sun report. Her former assistant, Ileen Spoor, had alleged Halverson defamed her when she claimed Spoor helped people fix traffic tickets and avoid jury duty.

District Judge David Wall determined damages after finding Halverson liable in September. He denied a claim for $100,000 in punitive damages.

Spoor’s lawyer, Assly Sayyar, told the Review-Journal that the case was about “making sure everyone knows that Ileen Spoor did nothing wrong, and is professionally and personally a person of great integrity.”

The Review-Journal tried to reach Halverson for comment at a phone number listed with the court, but it was not in operation. She was hospitalized last year after her husband beat her with a frying pan.
