A former Legislator in Suffolk County, N.Y., will be spending some time in the slammer after being sentenced to two consecutive prison terms today by a Suffolk County judge for converting an $835,000 fire insurance check on his home to his own use.

Citing clearcut evidence and a lack of remorse by attorney George Guldi for apparently forging the endorsement of the insurance company to whom the check was co-payable, Judge James F.X. Doyle imposed sentences of three to nine years for grand larceny and one to three years for insurance fraud, reports the Hampton Bays Patch.

Whether Guldi will be required to pay restitution has not yet been determined.

Guldi was pro se at trial, but his lawyer at sentencing, Leonard Lato of West Islip, said he plans to appeal. He also moved, without success, for a new trial.

Guldi remains a defendant in an ongoing mortgage fraud case which has not yet been tried.
