A former Justice Department official told the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday that he recruited job applicants from conservative groups such as the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation.

But Bradley J. Schlozman, who served as acting head of the civil rights division in 2005, said that when it came time to hire, he did not base his decision on politics, the New York Times reports. “These individuals, senator, were not hired because they were Republican,” he told Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

“Mr. Schlozman, it sure seems a contradiction to me,” Schumer responded.

Schlozman also defended his decision to file a voter fraud case against a liberal group shortly before an election in 2006, according to the Washington Post. At the time, he was serving as an interim U.S. attorney in Kansas City, Mo.

“I did not think it was going to influence the election at all,” he said.
