Ex-Lawyer Accused in Wife’s Shooting Death
A disbarred lawyer who lives down the street from Bill and Hillary Clinton has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife.
Carlos Perez-Olivo of Westchester, N.Y., was charged 13 months after the original crime, the New York Times reports. He had told investigators that a Hispanic gunman forced his way into his car when it was traveling on a desolate road, shooting his wife, Peggy, in the head and him in the stomach. He then drove to a hospital where his wife died two days later.
Perez-Olivo’s lawyer, Robert Buckley, told the Times that his client maintains his innocence. He said Perez-Olivo believes the perpetrator was targeting him and blames the gunman for putting him “in hell.”
Perez-Olivio was disbarred last year based on accusations he misappropriated bail money, failed to file appeals and charged excessive fees, the Times story says.
The Hartford Insurance Co. had refused to pay Perez-Olivio’s claim for $467,000 in life insurance proceeds on the ground that he had not been ruled out as a suspect in the shooting.
