A former lawyer has agreed to serve at least one year in prison for stealing $148,000 from at least 20 clients.

Richard Boter also agreed to pay $160,000 in restitution and forfeited cash when he entered his guilty plea in a New York court yesterday, the New York Law Journal reports.

Prosecutors said Boter had settled cases without his clients’ permission, forged the paperwork, and kept the settlement proceeds, the legal newspaper reports. Boter was caught up in an investigation of personal injury lawyers who used runners to obtain hospitalized clients. He was disbarred last month.
