A former prosecutor accused of yelling at employees of an adult store and screaming obscenities at police has agreed to a 30-day suspension.

The Illinois Supreme Court accepted the consent suspension on Sept. 21 for one-time Cook County prosecutor, Sarah Naughton. The Legal Profession Blog has the news.

The incident occurred in September 2012 in Chicago after Naughton attended a Cubs game. She drank at the ballpark, a bar and a local restaurant, according to the petition for discipline on consent. A partial video of the incident was posted on YouTube.

Naughton and her companion were asked to leave the adult store, Taboo Tabou, because employees believed they were creating a disturbance by talking in loud voices and stumbling, the petition says. Naughton yelled profanities as she was leaving.

An employee from a neighboring cigar store responded to a Taboo employee’s request for help and asked the couple, who were then outside Taboo Tabou, to leave. When Naughton’s companion began videotaping the cigar store employee, a confrontation ensued and Naughton tried to intercede, the petition says. Naughton “fell to the ground at the cigar store employee’s feet and grabbed his legs. She then got up and began yelling that she had been assaulted,” according to the petition.

Police arrested the couple. “Respondent told the female officer numerous times that she was an Assistant State’s Attorney, and repeatedly swore at the female officer, calling her derogatory names,” the petition says. “Respondent was eventually taken out of the SUV and sat on the curb screaming obscenities.”

The original ethics complaint against Naughton said she bit the cigar store employee, but it was not mentioned in the petition for discipline on consent.

Naughton was acquitted of charges brought in connection with the incident in an April 2013 bench trial, DNAinfo reported in this story.
