American Eagle Outfitters has agreed to eliminate a ban on employee cross-dressing in a legal settlement with the New York Attorney General’s office.

The Family Research Council has criticized the settlement as a threat to the freedoms of business owners, Legal Newsline reports. The New York Daily News reported last week that the retailer has agreed to train its staff on transgender issues, but did not admit any discrimination of transgender job hunters.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo had reached the settlement under the state’s Human Rights Law that bars job discrimination based on gender identity, the Daily News says.

FRC president Tony Perkins said Cuomo had used “bullying tactics and litigation to impose cross-dressing policies on American Eagle Outfitters.”
