Sentenced to life earlier this month in a Texas sex-assault case concerning a child bride, the leader of a fringe polygamous religious sect is in a medically induced coma as a result of post-sentencing fast but expected to recover.

Prison officials said Warren Jeffs, 55, was not on a hunger strike but had failed to eat and drink enough, according to the Associated Press and Scripps Newspapers.

Jeffs, who heads the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, reportedly is in critical but stable condition after being flown to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
