A faxed note from a Toronto lawyer helped police find the dismembered head of a murder victim, a Montreal detective testified on Wednesday at the murder trial for the suspect.

Montreal detective Antonio Paradiso testified that the fax was from the office of lawyer Raphael Feldstein and contained his initials, report the Montreal Gazette, the Global News and the Canadian Press. “You may find what you are looking for by following these directions,” the July 1, 2012, note read.

Police used the directions and canine units to find the severed head in an overgrown area near a pond.

Paradiso said he had never met the lawyer. The stories do not explain how Feldstein knew about the head.

The victim’s torso had been found in a suitcase and his feet and hands had been mailed to political parties in Ottawa and two schools in Vancouver, according to the Montreal Gazette.

The suspect, Luka Rocco Magnotta, has pleaded not guilty due to a mental disorder.
