A jet purchased to fly FBI agents on “crucial” counterterrorism missions overseas is being used to fly the agency’s director on routine business.

The Gulfstream V jet, supplied with state-of-the-art security equipment, flies Robert Mueller to speeches, public appearance and field office visits, according to the Washington Post. His trips account for 23 percent of the flight time, the newspaper says.

FBI officials said Mueller’s security advisers advise him to use the plane so he can be in instant contact with Washington if terrorists strike again. Mueller checks to make sure the plane is not needed for terrorist operations before using it, and the travel is approved by the Justice Department, they said.
