FDA Investigates 5 Deaths Linked to Monster Energy Drinks

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it is investigating five deaths and one nonfatal heart attack, linked to Monster Energy, a highly caffeinated beverage.
Last week, the Associated Press reports, a wrongful death suit was filed against the Corona, Calif., company by the parents of a 14-year-old girl who died after drinking two 24-ounce cans of Monster Energy in 24 hours.
According to the AP, an autopsy found that the girl died of cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity. Also, the wire service reports, she had a disorder that can weaken blood vessels. The story says that one 24-ounce can of Monster Energy has 240 milligrams of caffeine.
Monster Beverage Corp. has said it doesn’t believe the beverages caused any deaths. According to their website, the company also manufactures Hansen’s Natural sodas and BlueSky sodas.
