A federal district judge in New York is leaving the bench to form a Manhattan litigation boutique with two former colleagues from White & Case.

In addition to Richard J. Holwell, Michael Shuster and Daniel Goldberg are the name partners of Holwell Shuster & Goldberg, which opened its doors today at 335 Madison Avenue, the firm announced in a press release.

Shuster formerly was the global chief of commercial litigation at White & Case before joining Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman in 2008, along with Goldberg.

Another Kasowitz partner, Dorit Ungar Black, also is a founding partner of the boutique.

Holwell, 65, is a 1970 graduate of Columbia Law School. One of his most recent big cases as a judge was overseeing the insider-trading trial of Galleon Group hedge fund co-founder Raj Rajaratnam, reports the New York Law Journal.

“Serving as a federal judge was the honor of a lifetime,” he said in the press release. “But it’s time for me to stretch my legs and return to my roots as an advocate.”

Goldberg said he expects the new firm to offer alternative fee arrangements, the release notes:

“The market for legal services definitely is changing,” he stated. “Our new firm is committed to responding to oft-expressed client preferences for billing arrangements that are responsive to clients’ desire for cost certainty and appropriate risk sharing.”
