Federal judge wounded in shooting will participate in peace march

A federal judge wounded in a shooting outside his Detroit home in March 2015 plans to participate in a peace rally on Friday.
U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg will lead the walk, which begins this evening at his church, report the Detroit News and WXYZ-TV.
Berg has been working at home as he recovers from the shooting by an apparent robber who demanded that Berg let him into his house. Berg’s wife and son were inside the house, and the judge refused the man’s demand. The robber shot Berg in the knee.
The alleged trigger man, Kevin Andre Smith Jr. of Detroit, has a court hearing on Tuesday and is scheduled to go to trial on April 27.
Berg told WXYZ that the shooting has changed his outlook. “One thing I think it definitely has done, is made me able to empathize more with victims of gun violence,” he said. “The ironic thing is, in many of our criminal cases, when we read about the background of the defendant who’s charged—many of them have been gunshot victims as well. And so that also gives me a little bit of insight into that kind of challenge and that kind of suffering that that person had to go through.”
