After a number of defections, remaining partners at the Nevada-based Jones Vargas decided to get serious about recruiting more lawyers.

But instead, they got recruited themselves. As of July 1, a total of 23 lawyers from the firm joined Fennemore Craig, which will now be known in Nevada as Fennemore Craig Jones Vargas, reports the Northern Nevada Business Weekly.

The acquisition gives the 200-attorney Fennemore firm a new eight-attorney office in Reno and more than doubles the size of the Las Vegas office, which went from a 13-attorney roster to 28 lawyers.

Once home to 60 lawyers, Jones Vargas is now comprised solely of the 23 who are making the move to Fennemore Craig, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

“We have turned down a number of offers … for many years and figured it was about time,” said Joseph W. Brown, who served as Jones Vargas president, of the decision to join Fennemore Craig.

In recent years, it has been harder for his firm to compete for corporate business with larger law firms, and the recession didn’t help, he told the newspaper.

The Phoenix-based Fennemore Craig also has an office in Denver and Arizona offices in Nogales and Tucson.

A law firm press release provides additional details.
