A prisoner who hurt himself while trying to escape from jail has filed a lawsuit claiming a Colorado sheriff caused his injuries by making it too easy to flee.

Scott Anthony Gomez Jr. fell 40 feet as he used bedsheets to try to rappel down the side of the Pueblo County Jail, the Los Angeles Times reports. His lawsuit (PDF) says he required several surgeries for damaged internal organs, back, buttocks and other parts of his body.

Gomez had escaped once before with the help of bedsheet ropes, gaining two days of freedom before he was captured. His suit says the county sheriff should have done more to fix security problems after his initial escape.
