A Florida lawyer whose job as Broward Sheriff made him one of the most powerful political figures in the Miami area has resigned and reportedly plans to plead guilty to federal corruption charges.

Sources said Ken Jenne, 60, decided yesterday to plead guilty to tax evasion “and mail-fraud conspiracy charges to limit his prison time because he also was staring at an imminent grand jury indictment on more serious fraud and money-laundering d other offenses,” writes the Miami Herald.

Although Jenne made nearly $170,000 annually as sheriff, this was a fraction of the nearly $1 million a year he was earning in private practice before he was appointed sheriff in 1998, the newspaper states.

Despite reportedly receiving a substantial amount of additional income through consulting arrangements, Jenne has racked up more than $100,000 in debt and cashed out more than $400,000 in assets since 1998, according to financial disclosure forms that he filed with the state ethics commission.
