Never Mind About 2010, Katten Tells 6 Deferred Law Grads, Can You Start Now?

Back in March, when the economy looked particularly bleak, Katten Muchin Rosenman decided to defer the start date for its incoming class of first-year associates until February 2010.

But now Katten Muchin is asking six members of the class to begin work this month, due to an influx of legal work, a spokesman for the Chicago-based international firm tells the ABA Journal in a written statement.

"These associates will practice in the areas of litigation and intellectual property and are spread across all firm offices," says Jason Milch of Jaffe Associates Inc.

I’m sure that in this economy, burdened with a truckload of law school debt, these folks won’t look this gift horse in the mouth, but at some level musn’t they be wondering how good Katten is at running its business, when it first told them to show up in June, then told them to get lost until January, and now wants them to show up right away?

#1, I agree.  However, getting one corporate client with ongoing litigation can do this to a firm, and losing one can have the opposite effect.  That’s likely the case here.
