Former Apple general counsel Daniel Cooperman is headed back to Bingham McCutchen, where one of his tasks will be helping the law firm better understand its corporate clients and their frenetic pace.

The lesson he hopes to teach may be as simple as learning not to be offended when clients abruptly hang up the phone, Cooperman told the Wall Street Journal’s Digits blog.

Cooperman said many law firms don’t understand the fast-paced world of corporate counsel. “They move from one matter to the next in alarming, breathtaking speed,” he told the blog. “Until you’ve been inside the corporation and you’ve experienced it yourself, it’s hard to explain.”

Cooperman said he left Apple because he needed a break. “It’s an extreme amount of responsibility and accountability, and you need to be available fully 24 hours a day,” he told the blog. “After all that time, I really wanted a bit of sabbatical.”

Previous reports said Cooperman apparently lost out on $18 million in stock options when he retired from Apple in September. Cooperman took the general counsel job two years before that, replacing Donald Rosenberg, who held the job for less than a year.
