Former Baker & Hostetler partner John McNamara calls himself a “free-range lawyer.”

Outside of court, McNamara is a “Western-hat wearing, cowboy-boot strolling, cigar-butt chomping, shearling-coat and jean-clad lawyer,” the Denver Post reports. He has his own law firm now, and he prefers flat fees to billable hours. He also makes house calls. “I’m like the old family doctor who comes to your house with a medical bag,” McNamara told the newspaper.

McNamara believes the profession should change to a flat-fee system so clients know what to expect up front. “Billable hours ruined the legal profession,” he told the Post.
