A former divorce client has been arrested in the slaying of a Nebraska attorney who was shot outside his law office on Wednesday.

Police arrested Michael Petersen, 58, of Glenvil, whose ex-wife, Nancy Petersen, was found dead outside her home on Thursday morning, report the Omaha World-Herald, the Grand-Island Independent and the Lincoln Journal Star. The slain lawyer, Todd Elsbernd, 52, represented Michael Petersen in his 2005 divorce.

Police are investigating whether Michael Petersen was responsible for the death of Nancy Petersen. He was booked on suspicion of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in Elsbernd’s shooting death.

Michael Petersen sued Elsbernd for alleged malpractice in 2009, but the case was dismissed, the World-Herald says.

Elsbernd was a partner in the law firm of Bradley, Elsbernd, Andersen, Kneale & Jankovitz and a member of the school board.
