An Illinois lawyer is being tried in a criminal fraud case in federal court in Chicago, accused of cheating mortgage lenders out of almost $10 million by representing buyers he knew were not qualified to purchase at real estate closings.in and around the city.

Warren Ballentine has said on Facebook that he is innocent of the charges he faces, which include making false statements and bank, mail and wire fraud counts, reports the Chicago Tribune. He formerly hosted The People’s Attorney, a syndicated national talk radio program.

More than two dozen closings are at issue in the case, which concerns buyers recruited by others who allegedly falsely stated that they intended to live in the homes being purchased. The sales took place between December 2004 and May 2006.
