Former Prez Confirms the Reports: He Offered Supreme Court Nomination to Mario Cuomo
Former President Clinton confirmed Tuesday evening that he offered to nominate Mario Cuomo to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the New York governor didn’t want the job.
Clinton talked about the Cuomo offer at a fundraiser Tuesday evening for a homeless service organization, the New York Daily News reports. “He is the first man in the history of this country to turn down a position on the Supreme Court, and it’s because he was dedicated to New York,” Clinton said.
Jeffrey Toobin wrote of the offer in his book The Nine. In an interview posted on YouTube, Toobin said Clinton “implored” Cuomo to accept the nomination, but Cuomo didn’t want to give up the governorship. Cuomo stayed in office, ran for re-election and lost.
Clinton went on to tap Ruth Bader Ginsburg for the nomination.
