A former law clerk for alleged Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein has reportedly committed suicide.

The death of Julie Timmerman, 26, was not related to the scandal surrounding her former boss, police spokesman Frank Sousa told the Daily Pulp blog of the Broward-Palm Beach New Times. Sousa said the suicide was from an apparent drug overdose and appears to have been “family-related.”

Timmerman was a second-year student at Nova Southeastern University law school. She worked two summers as a clerk for Rothstein at the South Florida law firm Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler. According to one source, she was also a hostess at a restaurant he owned, the blog reports.

“Although it may not have been a direct cause of the suicide,” the Daily Pulp says, “the high-profile implosion of the law firm and Rothstein’s fall from grace could not have been easy for Timmerman, whose name surfaced in bankruptcy court documents as having received $60,000 in unpaid loans from the firm.”

Rothstein is reportedly negotiating a guilty plea in the alleged $1.2 billion investment fraud.
