A Georgia man stopped for a traffic violation on his first trip back to Wisconsin in three decades has been arrested on a 36-year-old unpaid child support warrant.

Stephen Schmidt, 70, of Jonesboro, Ga., was later released on $2,000 bond, Reuters reported.

Schmidt had been driving through Fond du Lac, Wis., on Friday when he was pulled over by a Wisconsin state trooper for driving without taillights and for having a loud exhaust, Wisconsin State Patrol Sgt. Jeff Nelson said.

A check of his driver’s license, which took more than a hour to conduct, turned up the outstanding child support warrant signed by a Milwaukee County judge in 1975.

“They used typewriters back then,” Nelson said.

Schmidt has a scheduled court appearance in Milwaukee on the outstanding warrant.
