Gender equality is theme of ABA Law Day program

The ABA is celebrating Law Day with a program this evening focusing on gender equality.
The Washington, D.C., event will consider questions such as: Has constitutional equality for women in the United States been realized? What are the appropriate roles of courts, legislatures and advocacy groups in advancing gender equality? What countries have constitutionally or legally guaranteed equal rights for women and men? What have been the results? An ABA press release has more information.
President Obama issued a proclamation (PDF) on Tuesday recognizing the Law Day theme of equality for all, the Wall Street Journal Law Blog (sub. req.) reports. The proclamation notes historical milestones such as the Emancipation Proclamation, Martin Luther King’s call for equality, the Civil Rights Act and other rights legislation.
Despite progress, “Opportunity remains painfully unequal for too many among us,” the proclamation says. “Law Day is a chance to reaffirm the critical role our courts have always played in addressing those wrongs and aligning our nation with its first principles.”
