University of California at Berkeley law professor Goodwin Liu will likely be a judge after all.

Liu’s nomination to the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was blocked in May by a Republican filibuster. On Tuesday, California Gov. Jerry Brown announced his nomination of Liu to the California Supreme Court, report the Recorder and the Los Angeles Times.

The nomination is expected to be approved by a three-member confirmation panel, the Los Angeles Times says. Brown told reporters that Liu was well-vetted in the federal nomination process and he considers that an advantage. “He’s been attacked by the best and sharpest politicians in the country,” Brown said.

Liu would be the fourth Asian on the seven-member California Supreme Court, a fact that has angered some Latinos. The Times says he would also likely be the court’s most liberal member.
