Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., told Fox News Sunday that Alberto Gonzales’ continued presence is “bad for the Justice Department,” but it’s up to President Bush to decide whether to demand a resignation, the New York Times reports.

Specter is the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is investigating the firings of eight U.S. attorneys. Gonzales faced tough questions before the committee last week.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who is leading the Senate investigation into the dismissals, told the news program that former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and political adviser Karl Rove also need to testify because “they may be at the nexus of this.”

In an interview last Wednesday, before the hearings were held, Miers said Gonzales should not step down. “I certainly think the attorney general should continue to serve,” Miers told the Dallas Morning News.
