Groundhog Day is a Repeating Theme in Life of Punxsutawney Lawyer

Punxsutawney Phil may be Jeff Lundy’s most high-profile client.

The Pennsylvania lawyer is a board member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club and the defender of the groundhog’s trademark, obtained in 1995, the Indiana Gazette reports.

Each year Lundy sends out three or four cease-and-desist letters and five to 10 follow-up inquiries. He once sued a ski company that depicted Phil being killed by a skier angry over a short winter. But there have been no suits over bad weather predictions—because Phil is never wrong, Lundy told the Gazette.

Lundy is philosophical about his work for Phil, which he handles for free.

"I wouldn't have thought in law school my claim to fame would be representing a groundhog,'' Lundy, a partner in Lukehart & Lundy, told the newspaper. “But I don't have any problem with it. Maybe someday my practice will expand and I can represent other animals.''
