A former New York City doctor was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of conspiring to treat al-Qaida fighters.
U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska said the sentencing of Rafiq Sabir, 52, now of Boca Raton, Fla., would deter others from aiding terrorists.
Sabir denounced his May conviction and proclaimed his innocence, the New York Daily News reports.
"I am completely innocent," Sabir told Preska. "I am an extremely gullible man who made a lot of foolish mistakes."
Sabir claims he was set up by a friend and didn't realize he had pledged a loyalty to al-Qaida.

Wasn’t this the same argument made by convicted National Lawyers Guild terrorist Lynne Stewart?
“I’m just an old lady. I had NO IDEA that secretly passing notes from a jailed ‘93 WTC bomber to people in the Middle East could cause a problem! Really! I’m just an old lady…”
