Electronic data breaches have become ubiquitous among U.S. companies, according to a recent poll. Ponemon Research reports that 90 percent of 583 U.S. companies surveyed said their companies’ computers were breached at least once by hackers within the past year, PC World reported.
Private sector and government entities that ranged from fewer than 500 employees to more than 75,000 were included in the online survey. Limited resources and complex networks were cited as the top challenges to protecting electronic data.
“To have 90 percent saying they had experienced at least one breach and more than 50% saying they had experienced two or more is mind blowing,” said Johnnie Konstantas, director of product marketing at Juniper Networks, which commissioned the study. It suggests “that a breach has become almost a statistical certainty,” these days.
