Law school applications are dropping, but school admissions officers say their standards are not.

Those are the results of a survey of 190 law schools conducted by Kaplan Test Preparation and Admissions. Half of the law schools surveyed reported a decline in applicants, yet 79 percent said their admissions process has not become less competitive.

Kaplan prelaw programs director Steve Marietti told BYU NewsNet that the paradoxical results may be explained by an increase in the caliber of applicants. Law school applications dropped 4.8 percent last year and are down 17.4 percent this year, Marietti told the Massachusetts Daily Collegian.
