In its 23 years as a Los Angeles law firm, Richardson & Patel has never had to lay off an attorney.
But that changed one Monday in September, when name partner Nimish Patel lowered the boom on five associates at the 50-attorney firm, due to the struggling economy. "It was the hardest thing I've ever done," he tells the National Law Journal in an article reprinted in New York Lawyer (reg. req.).
The firm also laid off half a dozen staffers.

The losing of those half-dozen staffers must grieve the partners sore, but the losing of those five SOC8s, now that will surely grieve them ten times more.
