Go Set a Watchman

Harper Lee’s new book, Go Set a Watchman, has sold 1.1 million copies, the Associated Press reports.

The book, released July 14, as of Monday held No. 1 sales spots on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, according to the article. Lee’s prior book, To Kill a Mockingbird, is among both sites’ top 10, sellers the AP reports.

The numbers for Go Set a Watchman represent print, electronic and audio format, according to the article. Lee’s publisher, HarperCollins, has increased its initial print run 2 million print run to 3.3 million. It is that publishing house’s fastest-selling book in history.

The new book follows To Kill a Mockingbird’s storyline, 20 years later, and Atticus Finch is revealed to harbor racist and segregationist beliefs. Lee submitted Watchman’s completed manuscript to publishers in 1957.

Tonja Carter, Lee’s attorney, says that she discovered the writing last year. Some have questioned the 89-year old’s ability to decide she wanted it released. The Alabama Securities Commission said in March that Harper Lee was aware of the book deal and closed its investigation into her decision-making capabilities.
