Hasan found guilty of 13 counts of murder in Fort Hood shooting rampage
A jury of 13 high-ranking U.S. Army officers has found Army Maj. Nidal Hasan guilty of 13 counts of murder and 32 counts of attempted murder in the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas.
The verdict means Hasan could face the death penalty for opening fire on his fellow soldiers in a what he claimed was an effort to protect Muslim insurgents abroad, the Associated Press and CNN report.
The Army psychiatrist admitted carrying out the bloody attack in a room where unarmed troops were making preparations to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq.
The AP notes that because Hasan never denied pulling the trigger, the court-martial was more about what penalty he’ll receive. During the next phase of Hasan’s trial, the 13 officers must all agree in order for Hasan to be sentenced to death row. Otherwise, he faces a sentence of life in prison.
