Herbert Smith has announced that it will open its planned New York office in September with a six-partner litigation team from Chadbourne & Parke.

Headed by Thomas E. Riley, who is the chief of Chadbourne’s litigation department, the group focuses on products liability litigation and tobacco litigation, reports Legal Week.

They will be joined by an arbitration partner from Herbert Smith who is relocating his practice from London to the United States.

“We have recruited a very high calibre team whose reputation will allow us to hit the ground running in New York,” said Jonathan Scott, a senior partner at Herbert Smith. “Their collegial, cohesive approach fits in well with our culture and provides a very strong platform on which to achieve our objective of building a leading cross-border disputes practice in New York.”

Andrew Giaccia, who serves as managing partner of Chadbourne, wished the departing partners well, calling them distinguished lawyers and thanking them for their contributions to the firm, the Legal Week article reports. He also said Chadbourne remains “committed to a strong products liability litigation practice in the U.S. and internationally.”
