Hertz Global Holdings Inc. is working on a plan to use high-resolution digital photographs to prove damage to its rental car fleet and assess customers for the cost.

“There will be no discussion because the document would clearly show any incremental damage,” Mark Frissora, the company’s chairman and CEO, tells Bloomberg. “This keeps customers from being placed in a confrontational position and saves time.”

He says Hertz presently loses about $170 million annually in unreimbursed rental car damage costs. Once the system is in place, customers would have to sign a waiver authorizing the digital damage-assessment process before they would be allowed to rent a car.
