A high school senior in Tennessee says she was disciplined because she said “bless you” after a classmate sneezed.

As Kendra Turner tells the story, her Dyer County High School teacher told her such comments were for church. “She said that we’re not going to have godly speaking in her class and that’s when I said we have a constitutional right,” Turner recounted to WMC.

She said she was sent to an administrator’s office and finished the class period with an in-school suspension as a result of the comment.

The school superintendent didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from the station.

Turner’s parents met with school officials Tuesday. They said the school is claiming their daughter was disruptive and aggressive, shouting “bless you” at a level that carried the comment throughout the classroom, WMC reports.
