Chicago-based Hinshaw & Culbertson has cut 11 lawyers and 17 support staffers in a move attributed to the economic downturn.
Managing partner Bill Roberts told the National Law Journal that the layoffs weren’t confined to any particular practice area or office. The firm has about 490 lawyers in 26 offices in 12 states.
"We met all of our financial goals for 2008, but having said that we're feeling the pinch that most law firms and individuals are feeling also," Roberts told the NLJ. He said the firm is “very financially healthy” but the economic climate is “frightening.”

Even more frightening to the people who are laid off. Maybe the February layoff numbers will be smaller than January. February is a short month.

Of course all the financial goals were met - the partners made sure THEY were taken care of. It’s the worker bees who are expendable. when will you ever see a law firm where the partners agree to take a little less so others can keep their jobs? George Bush would be re-elected first.

This is all King Bush’s fault. Obama has done nothing wrong. Obama will save the economy from ruin.

Yessir - just churn out those billable hours. Work on a Saturday, work on a Sunday, work on holidays but churn out those billable hours, however needless they may be to the client’s case. Do all that - and you’ll still get sacked - can’t expect the partners to lessen the amount of their draw. Welcome to big law firm practice.
