A hiring partner at a Kansas City, Mo., law firm who has been recruiting lawyers for 17 years is seeing a change in applicants this year.

For the first time, says William Beil, he is seeing resumés from Ivy League law graduates and lawyers from prestigious New York law firms, the Associated Press reports. Many of the applicants are unemployed.

”We’re seeing overall a much higher caliber of candidate than we’ve seen in the past,” Beil said. He is currently hiring two or three new lawyers.

AP included Beil’s comments in a story about two surveys showing few companies plan to increase hiring next year. He is a hiring partner at the litigation boutique Rouse Hendricks German May. The Kansas City Business Journal also covered the firm’s recruiting efforts.

The Business Journal story says the law firm is recruiting former judicial clerks and is so busy it has had to turn away some litigation work.
