Miami lawyer Peter Prieto is leaving his seat as chair of Holland & Knight’s defense-oriented litigation group to do plaintiffs work for a boutique across town.

Next week, Preito is joining Podhurst Orseck, where he’ll have the distinction of being the first lateral hire there in 28 years, the Daily Business Review reports.

Preito tells the publication that he wasn’t looking to leave Holland & Knight, where he’d spent the last 16 years, but when Podhurst approached four months ago, they offered an opportunity too good to pass up. He’s especially eager to get back into the courtroom.

“Working in a litigation boutique is considered by many to be the gold standard,” Prieto is quoted saying. “To handle complex and challenging cases with great lawyers who also happen to be my friends was incredibly appealing.”

The last lateral to join the now 13-member firm was Bob Josefsberg, who came aboard in 1982. Holland & Knight counts more than 1,100 lawyers among its ranks.
