Homes Searched for Drugs in New Orleans Will Be Identified by Orange Stickers
New Orleans police officers will let the public know they are following up on anonymous tips by placing bright orange stickers on homes searched for drugs.
New Orleans police superintendent Ronal Serpas says the stickers will be used as part of a six-month pilot program, even when no drugs are found or no arrests are made, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The homeowners can remove the stickers, and they won’t cause any damage, according to a police spokesperson.
The move brought condemnation from Marjorie Esman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana. “This is like a scarlet letter tattooed onto the homes of otherwise innocent people, giving them no presumption of innocence,” she told the newspaper.
