"We're finally going to learn who really shot J.R.," Stephen Colbert said on Wednesday's Colbert Report, previewing his interview with Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins.

"Why aren't you a cowboy? Colbert asked Watkins. "Lawmen in Texas have spurs."

Watkins pointed out that he does wear cowboy boots.

The bulk of the interview covers Watkins' explanation of the purpose and process of the office's Conviction Integrity Unit, which has played a part in freeing 22 wrongfully convicted people from prison, Tex Parte reported. The unit was also the basis of a TV show, Dallas DNA, which aired last year on Investigation Discovery.

Watkins has previously said that wrongful convictions of 45 Texas defendants since 2001 have cost the state $8.6 million.
