Hotel strike, thought to be the world's longest, is over
Cleaning and maintenance workers are ending their nearly 10-year-old strike against the Congress Plaza hotel in Chicago.
The strike is thought to be the world’s longest, the Chicago Tribune reports. Unite Here Local 1 offered an unconditional return to work, says hotel lawyer Peter Andjelkovich. “Frankly we’re as surprised as you are,” he told WGN TV in a broadcast interview.
Andjelkovich said the union has not negotiated with the hotel in a year. “We do not know why they took this position,” he said.
Andjelkovich said the workers would go back to work under the contract that expired in 2002. The union has given the hotel a list of striking workers, and it is being reviewed.
Unite Here Local 1 president Henry Tamarin said in a statement that “the boycott has effectively and dramatically reduced the hotel’s business” and “there is no more to do there.”
