Lawmakers in the Illinois house and senate OK’d same-sex marriage on Tuesday, setting the stage for the state governor to give the measure its final approval.

Illinois is now poised to become the 15th state to recognize marriages between same-sex couples, since Gov. Pat Quinn has supported the bill, the Chicago Sun-Times (sub. req.) reports.

Although civil unions of same sex-couples were already allowed, that isn’t the same as being married, said sponsoring Rep. Greg Harris. “To treat all our citizens equally in the eyes of the law, we must change this,” he told colleagues before the measure passed, the Chicago Tribune reports.
